以上英汉两条谚语正好用了同一比喻，意思是指责一些人利用别人困难而捞到好处，或者是趁国家危急或社会混乱时去牟取暴利。
英语里还有些类似意思的成语，如to add fuel to the fire及to rock the boat，前者相当于中国成语“火上加油”或“趁火打劫”；后者意思是船在风浪中颠簸还要摇撼它，都有加剧混乱形势，以趁机得到好处的意思。
另有一句意思相似的谚语：

此句正好相当于《战国策》中的“鹬蚌相争，渔翁得利”的意思，只是用了不同的比喻而已。“浑水摸鱼”与“坐收渔人之利”都有“趁火打劫”（to take advantage of somebody\’s misfortune to plunder his burning house）之嫌。
